More about Campus Family Care
What really motivates you to set up Campus Family Care?
It started when we were studying at the UWA campus. As international student and parent with children, it was very challenging situation for us. At one side, we have to focus with our study which needs a lot of energy and concentration, while at the same time we also need to look after our children.
The cost of child centre in Australia is tremendeously expensive and it can cost you at least AUD$100 a day. Most international students don’t have equal access to receive child care benefit from government which makes the situation is even getting worse. To send your children to a conventional child care center isn’t a viable option.
Motivated by this unpleasant experiences, we come to the idea to start Campus Family Care. Why don’t we invite communities or other family members to look after our children? The idea sounds great which can actually solve our problem. We talked to students and communities, and surprisingly we got overwhelming supports from them.
In fact, it is really difficult to find a affordable caregiver to take care your children. Local newspapers, parenting magazine or word-of-mouth are some of best channels to search a caregiver. However, once you got a suitable caregiver for your children, they will charge you with a normal and standard rate? So, the problem is not solved!
Our solution is to develop a platform that match availability of societies, family members and students as caregivers to take care other student’s children. We are able to offer a competitive and affordable rate of child care for about 50% less than conventional child care centres, as all activities will be done at caregiver’s residence.
It is a win-win solution for all of us. We, student who need an affordable caregiver, will reap most of the benefits through saving in child care tuition, while at the same time societies, family members and other students as caregivers are also get benefited from having another source of income.
Why do you limit your project only for your campus?
We start small. At the first stage, we focus to solve problem in our UWA campus that need immediate attentions. We differenciate ourself as social bricoleur entrepreneur with small scale coverage of operation. We could also think, it is as a pilot project. Upon successful of this campaign, we are very keen to spread our platform to other campus and universities, not only for the City of Perth, but also Australia-wide and elsewhere all accross the globe.
Could you tell us what is your actual product?
Our solution is to provide a platform that match availability of caregiver to look after your children. It is a mobile application that can be accessed through your mobile phone.
Who are your team?
If I may say, our team is everybody who really support our campaign including students of UWA, societies, teachers and professors. For this competition, our team are:
1. Riznaldi Akbar, PhD student.
2. Rahma Lestari, Perth community representative.
Riznaldi is expected to finish his PhD study in 2017 from University of Western Australia. He has a great passion in economics and entrepreneurships; and has written a number of academic articles in these fields. Rahma is an experienced a support worker helping people with disabilities with spinal cord and brain injury. She is also a mother with two children.
How big is your market size?
At the moment, there are about 330,000 international students studying accross Australian university. Out of 330,000, about 10% of them (35,000) are students with family and children. We see this is a big captive market for our business. In our campus, there are at least 350 international students with children.
Tell be briefly about your business model?
We summarize our business plan in one concise page of canvas business model as follows.
How about your profit and cost structure?
For every transaction, we collect 5% fee commission. All transaction will be done through credit card, Paypal and Stripe account. This revenues are to be used for further development of our business, including business expansion, subscription, database management; mobile and web platform.
Most of our expenses are for caregiver salaries. We charge AUD$10 per hour with minimal 3 hours a day. All caregivers will receive total amount of salary less 5% commission.
Why is your child care rate is so competitive?
As all provision of child care services will be done at caregiver’s residence, there are no cost associated for building facilities or infrastructure like a conventional child care centre. While caregiver are staying at their house, why not to take care your children and get some cash?
We also believe that not all people are money-oriented, so they may accept lower standard rate. There are some groups of people that are very keen to help other people in needs as well as very altruistic and benevolent in nature. Keep in mind that the best and most success people in the world is not a rich people in a monetary term, but people who can do something for societies.
How do you look your competitors?
We see hardly no competitors in this business with respects to affordable child care service provisions. We also offer a convenient mobile platform which provides an additional unfair advantage for our business.
