Dear Participants,

As you know, Social Business Creation team is closely monitoring the situation surrounding the spread of COVID-19 and the containment measures adopted by our various political authorities. A few weeks ago, we initiated a consultation process with our main stakeholders, in order to evaluate available alternatives for the competition and define the best course of action under these unprecedented circumstances. We thank you very much once again for your input and feedback throughout this process.

HEC Montréal has suspended all activities scheduled on campus until August 23, 2020 and this suspension period might be extended beyond this date. The Government of Canada has closed the country’s borders for non-essential travel, and at this time, we have no indication on when they will be reopened.

Under these constraints, we are obliged to adapt the schedule for SBC 2020 to the current situation.

Modifications of the SBC 2020 calendar

Round 1: deadline postponed to June 1st 2020 (11:59 pm, Eastern Time)

Round 2: deadline postponed to August 1st 2020 (11:59 pm, Eastern Time)

Training Week & Final Rounds: postponed to 2021 (August, exact date TBA)

Note: The Training Week and the Final Rounds of the 5th edition (2020) will take place at the same time as those of the 6th edition (2021). This entails that the calendar for the 6th edition will also be slightly adapted. SBC team will share more details about this in the following weeks as the information becomes available.

Academic Credits for Students

For students who will finish their studies in December 2020 and who count on their participation in SBC to obtain their credits in order to graduate, we have chosen to ease our criteria.

To obtain credits for participation in SBC, students must:

  • Participate in Rounds 1 & Round 2 and deliver the requiredassignments following the new deadlines (June 1st 2020 & August 1st 2020)
  • Record their final pitch by video, according to the same criteria as those established for the Semi-Final: deadline September 28th

Important note: All teams that complete Round 1 & Round 2 of the 2020 edition (5th edition) will be eligible to participate in the Training Week and the Finals Rounds in Montreal, as well as compete for Semi-Final and Final Round prizes, during the 2021 edition (6th edition).  This applies even if participants have already graduated from their respective Universities.


Online courses and on-demand coaching at distance are maintained until the final round.

On-site training in Montreal will be given in August 2021 to participants of both 2020 and 2021 editions that complete Round 1 and Round 2 of their respective edition.

Cash prizes

The SBC 2020 prizes for Round 2 (5x $ 2,000) are maintained. They are conditional to the participation in the Final Rounds in Montreal, in 2021.

All other prizes are postponed to the Final Rounds that will take place in 2021.

To the worldwide SBC family,

The global spread of COVID-19 is affecting all of us in different ways. At SBC, our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of our participants and partners across the world. We are closely monitoring the information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during this challenging time.

Due to the spread of COVID-19 having important repercussions for many of our participants and their projects, Social Business Creation competition has decided to implement several changes to our scheduling for SBC 2020. We understand the seriousness of the situation and how it can impact the work of participants in the competition.

Here are the specific changes that are being implemented for SBC 2020:

  1. Round 1 – the submission deadline will be postponed.
    • The new deadline for Round 1 will be May 15th
  1. Round 2 – the submission deadline will be postponed.
    • The new deadline for Round 2 will be July 17th

At this time, the dates for Round 3 are maintained. The Training Week, Semi-Final and Grand Final will still be held from September 21st 2020 to September 28th 2020 (inclusive). We will notify participants and partner institutions if the specifications of Round 3 change in the coming weeks or months.

In order to minimise the impacts on learning, participants are asked to continue to follow the online course materials and templates for their project presentation to the best of their abilities and resources. SBC is committed to continuing to provide online coaching for Round 1 and Round 2 of the competition when needed.

Also, as numerous schools are closed and classes have been suspended for many of our partner institutions, SBC team will additionally organize and offer online teaching sessions in Round 1 and Round 2 of the competition, if there is a demand from participants. Please communicate with SBC team at with any requests for online teaching sessions and we will do our best to organize them as promptly as possible.
